Today Kashmir is observing the forth anniversary of shopian double rape and murder incident, when on 29th May 2009, two young girls Asiya, 17 and Nilofer 22, went to the family orchard and their bodies were spotted after 8 hours near the ankle high deep Rambir nallah in Shopian.

The duo was sister in laws and good friends who shared the best moments of their life together and also met the same terrible fate. The incident shook the Kashmir Valley in general and Shopian in particular. Villagers alleged that both were raped and murdered by the security forces. The incident sparked widespread protests across the valley with people coming on streets and demanding justice. Clashes broke out at several places in valley and many innocent lives got killed by Paramilitary forces, who used all means of force to quell the protests.
The incident was added fuel by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah himself when he issued the first statement asserting the deaths by drowning; which however CM retracted later by saying “something happened in shopian” .

Three days later when forensic experts confirmed rape and murder, forcing police to register the case, Omar did not took any action against the officers for misleading and misinforming him. Rather he got angry with himself for not remaining quite in that press conference. “I should have said no comments when I was asked about the cause of death of two women” CM Omar Abdullah said to a National Newspaper.

It is quite astonishing how Omar swallowed such humiliation at the hands of his own officers and rather punishing him, he wanted to remain silent.

The suspension of four police officers the then SP Shopian Javaid Iqbal, DSP Rohit Baskotra, SHO shafiq ahmad and SI Gazi Abdul Karim and their arrest by the orders of high court somehow stabilized the situation, but it didn’t helped much to stop people protesting.
Seeing the deteriorating situation in Kashmir valley, Omar went on record that he will use all means to identify and Punish the culprits and ordered an investigation headed by Justice Muzaffar Jan, but nothing yielded positive out of it. Even The Hurriyat leaders took the central stage , issued protest calendars to get justice , but all in vain and soon, all die down and the case is still pending.
Today it has been four years when Asiya and Nilofer were lynched, by Unknown Culprits, who still roam free. Despite the reported evidences, it was clear who did it and what behest, but nothing has been done, with reason better known to the people in Power.
Today, it has been four years of Asiya and Nelofer lying in their Graves and their blood crying for justice. Today they will be raising questions on all of us, that did they come to the world only to met that brutal fate? Today they will be turning over in their graves, smiling on our helplessness to let such things happens.
Observing anniversary is the not the real tribute to them , but the security that we need to provide to our woman folks and raise our voice to such level, that has never happened and never heard.
